A practical method
A participation charter
A participation charter with scope, privacy questions, conduct, moderation capacity and closure plans. Work through the prompts in your own notes. No information is submitted or saved here.
Purpose and scope
State topic, intended participants, allowed activity and explicit exclusions. Ask whether an existing supported route already serves the need.
Entry and privacy
Map what identity, contact and content would be visible, stored and removable. Do not promise private messaging, anonymity or deletion without an operating design.
Conduct and reporting
Write a few concrete examples of acceptable and unacceptable conduct, report channels, urgency and protection against retaliation.
Moderation and appeal
Name trained decision owners, response capacity, records, escalation and a fair appeal path. Leave the community closed if those roles are vacant.
Lifecycle and closure
Plan onboarding, policy revision, data export/deletion, temporary pause and final closure. Assign a steward and publication approval.
Record the outcome
- What is the proposed next step, and who owns it?
- What evidence supports it, and what remains unknown?
- What would make you pause or change direction?
- When will the decision be reviewed?
Keep private details in your own records. This is a reading guide, not a submission form.
